One of the main reasons for this law is to prevent gas driveoffs which has become pretty prevalent over the past few years and is why nearly every gas station in the country has gone to pre-pay. Myself-I prefer to pump my own fuel.

I was chatting with a friend (who moved away from NJ but is back there for a couple months working a contract job) -- I asked about fueling and he said "It's almost a pain, compared to Alabama, but on cold, wet days it is awfully nice to crack my window, pass out my credit card and stay warm." With winter rolling in soon (had to scrape my wife's windshield on Sunday) and NJ's already low gas prices, that doesn't sound too bad to me! Oregon, the other no-self-service state, is in the list of ten states with the highest prices in the nation (though still slightly lower priced than most of their self-service neighbors, except Idaho). I don't have a source (reliable or otherwise) on per gallon taxes / terminal prices of gasoline nationwide -- do you suppose their lower price is a result of no-self-serve or purely taxation? I like doing it myself and I do not want to spend more money for the service.

Why would we want to pay more and be legally bound to do it. As it is, Full Serve has been gone from here for many years. No need to bring it back.

During the "sniper" period in this area several years, many stations announced they'd pump for you at no extra charge if you asked; the intent being you could remain in your car. Now you'll find several stations, if you look hard and long enough, with a sign that says they'll serve the handicapped or disabled, or have a single full-serve pump, for which they charge upwards of 20 to 30 cents a gallon more. I know of two area gas stations that provided full service; one, in Mt Airey, MD changed to a self-serve Mobil, the other, near the Watergate Complex in Washington DC, has always provided full service (if you self-serve before they come out, it's the same price), but it charges about 20 cents per gallon more than a nearby self-serve station. That station pays significantly higher rent than most stations, is extremely small, has always charged more and has always provided full service, has average (I've heard) as few as 50 gas customers a day, and provides top of the line service in it's small bay, at a relatively good price.

I think people everywhere should have the option to pump themselves or have someone else pump for them.

I love full-service gas stations, however, and we have only 4 here in Austin.(I've only used 1 of them, but I go out of my way to do so.)

My first job was pumping gas a a filling station. We checked the oil, water, air in the tires and cleaned the windshield while the gas was being pumped. I bet it would reduce our maintenance cost if we returned to it.
