Large effect (Most items in the market are more expensive, all services are more expensive, as well.)

Yes, it has a large effect because it prevents consumers from spending money on other items and drives the prices up on other items they need.

No, we do not see it in the published economic data. Unemployment is at a record low.

Of course. The more money that one has to spend out of a fixed budget on fuel than the less money that can be spent elsewhere in the economy (ie. restaurants, movies, shopping, vacations, etc.)

One does not see much effect in the economic data, just in the emotions of people - particularly those who commute long distances to work.

If amount of money now spent on gas was diverted from other business, those businesses would be affected. Businesses that rely on gas for their operation would have to raise prices to maintain profitability.

On the other hand, current oil and gas prices take a smaller percentage of the average citizen's wages than they did two decades ago according to today's GLOBE AND MAIL. See today's news articles.

They have to. Transportation costs of materials have to be factored in prices, which will contribute to inflation. Also, some people will have to buy less of other things to pay the higher costs of gasoline.

WOW!, I guess it depends on your point of view. It probably does even out (self correct) as someone said, the poor get poorer and the rich pocket the difference. As a retiree I feel it has affected me quite a bit and therefore the local economy to some extend. I have just cancelled my order for next years season tickets to the city Little theater and the University drama/music theater. No big deal on an individual basis, but several hundred bucks taken out of the local economy when you figure diner and gas to and from the theater etc.
As for vacations, no effect as yet. Thank gosh for Frequent Flyer miles except they have just about doubled the miles required so they will go pretty fast now to.
