Sure. The usage rates of China and India are rising. Terrorists are desperate to wreak any havoc possible. A couple more powerful Gulf of Mexico hurricanes or refinery accidents could do it.

No doubt it will happen within 5 years. The question is will it happen this year? We also should start asking how soon we will see gasoline prices above $5/gal.

denix29 -- people are free to say what they want. Your advice of ignoring the situation is heeded by most politicians (government and opposition!) - keeping their mouths shut and not talking about what it really takes to resolve this (reducing North American consumption). The solutions are scary and painful, but ignoring them will cause even higher gas prices and greater pain.
Thanks to responses like yours (ignoring instead of acting) and politicians taking them to heart, we are virtually assured of $100 /barrel within 5 years!

No. I wish people would quit worrying about it and I wish the media would keep their mouths shut and stop saying things like this to scare us.

No, but it may feel that way if government fuel taxes were really raised to the point where they paid for the street and highway system.

Yes, it could happen at anytime. Just let the terrorists blow up a major oil terminal or refinery and you will see what happens. The failed terrorist plot in Saudi Arabia still caused oil to spike $2.50 per barrel. Had the been successful, can you imagine what would have happened?

Yes, very likely. As long as the US governments (1) continue to block oil recovery in ANWR, US coastal, sea floor and other large known oil fields, and (2) continue to insist on regressive roadblocks that effectively prevent construction of badly needed refineries in the US, then you can be well assured that the price of crude will not only reach $100 / bbl in the next 5 years, but very likely to exceed it.

In the next five years, yes. Oil is very fragile right now, so any interuption of the supply could cause it to skyrocket again.

Yes - there are signs that the world may have reached peak crude oil production or is very close to reaching that point. When people realise that the supply of oil is limited, then the price is going to rocket up.

Nah, maybe 10 years from now. Cars will be on average $50,000 by then and still not worth the $30,500 average they are right now.
